Builder’s wisdom: The advice every homeowner needs before starting a renovation
At The Page, we’re more than a collection of individual services; we’re a network of experts all pulling in the same direction. From our office team who help you navigate the big decisions, to the skilled tradespeople who bring your vision to life, everyone plays a vital role. And here’s something we’re particularly proud of: we don’t gate-keep what we know.
The builders we work with, our Pagers, aren’t just names on a roster. They’re people with real experience, hard-earned knowledge, and genuine insight into what makes a renovation succeed or stumble. Every project teaches us something new, and we believe that sharing what we learn only makes everyone’s journey better. So this week, we asked three of our Pagers a simple question: “As a builder, what advice would you give to homeowners going into a renovation?”
Their answers? Gold dust for anyone planning work on their home.
Alex: “Don’t cut corners to cut costs”
Alex is one of our most recent additions to the team, but he’s already become invaluable. Raised in Lebanon, and now a driven business and family man living in Morden, in a house that he renovated himself, with his wife, two sons, a daughter, a husky named Storm, and two cats (one of whom, he assures us, is genuinely the most laid-back feline you’ll ever encounter).
His advice cuts straight to a trap many homeowners fall into:
“Don’t cut corners to cut costs. You can end up paying twice further down the line if you mistake this for efficiency. An example; if you run into a problem mid-project – like finding damp upon stripping out a kitchen, due to previous negligence – address it then, or gain little value from your reno. Find a trustworthy builder (like me!) who can offer advice and expertise when it comes to being thorough, and where spending money is worthwhile. Then, just trust the process.”
Why this matters: The temptation to skip a “small” fix to keep costs down is real, especially when budgets are tight. But damp behind a wall won’t wait politely for you to afford it later, it’ll only get worse, and more expensive. Alex’s point is that the right builder doesn’t just execute your plan; they help you understand when spending money now saves you from spending more later.
Alan: “Brace yourself, but you’re in safe hands”
If you’ve ever met Alan, you know two things immediately: his smile is infectious, and his laugh could brighten the greyest of days. Originally from Poland, Alan now lives near Luton with his family, bringing warmth and experience to every project he touches.
His take on renovation reality is refreshingly honest:
“Brace yourself! Renovating is not for the faint-hearted. There are many decisions to be made, you will find it stressful at times, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. Fear not, here is my advice: Choose a builder that you trust and respect, who has experience with similar projects to yours and maybe even lives round the corner. We are the experts who do this everyday – you’re in safe hands!”
Why this matters: Alan isn’t sugarcoating it – renovations are challenging. But his honesty isn’t meant to scare you off; it’s meant to prepare you. When you know what to expect, you can face those stressful moments with someone experienced by your side. Local expertise, relevant experience, and genuine trust make all the difference between a bumpy ride and complete derailment.
Alex: “Plan before you demolish”
Our second Alex, who hails from Romania though now lives in Harrow, brings a different energy. When he’s not reshaping homes, he’s diving deep in his scuba gear, or tearing up trails on his mountain bike. That sense of adventure translates into his work, but he’s adamant about one thing: adventure without preparation is just chaos.
“Plan before you jump in and demolish. The best renovations start with clear goals, a realistic budget, and decisions made early. The more you think it through upfront, the smoother, cheaper, and less stressful the build will be.”
Why this matters: There’s something thrilling about the idea of knocking down walls and starting fresh, but that excitement can mask the importance of proper planning. Decisions made in haste – or mid-project, because you didn’t think them through earlier – cost more in every sense: time, money, and sanity. Alex’s advice is simple; do the thinking before you swing the sledgehammer.
What this really means for you
Three builders, three distinct pieces of advice – but they all point to the same truth: renovations succeed when you have expertise on your side from the start.
Alex reminds us that value isn’t the same as cost. Alan reminds us that experience and trust matter more than convenience. Alex reminds us that thinking ahead saves you stress later.
And that’s precisely what The Page is built around. We don’t just connect you with skilled tradespeople and step back. We’re with you through every decision, every unexpected discovery, every moment where you need someone who’s seen it all before to say, “here’s what makes sense.”
Our Pagers aren’t just executing your plans, they’re part of the conversation; offering the kind of real-world insight that only comes from being in the trenches day after day. And because we work as one cohesive team, you get the benefit from all that collective knowledge – not just from one builder, but from an entire network of people who genuinely care about getting your project right.
