Frequently asked questions
How much does standard bathroom renovation cost in London?
To rip out and install a standard-sized new bathroom (2.5m x 2.5m) without changing the layout of a period property will cost in labour and building materials between £6k-£8k. Expect to pay around £1.5k+ for your fixtures and fittings such as toilet, bath, vanity unit, shower tray, tiles, etc. Changing the layout of the bathroom and moving the soil pipe, installing underfloor heating, and any structural work will increase costs. Adam’s and Camilla’s complete bathroom renovation was closer to 3.5m x 4m, so their overall price reflects that.
Do I need a designer if I want to change the layout?
No. All our bathroom fitters can help with basic bathroom design and sketches. If you want to eliminate almost all risk in your bathroom renovation and take it all out of your hands when changing the layout, we would recommend using a designer, which we can help with. Even if you use a designer, you should always have your contractor sign off the designs to make sure they work with the live space and the renovation process.
Should I tile the entire bathroom?
If it’s a small bathroom renovation that gets wet and doesn’t have good ventilation, it’s a good option, as tiles are water-resistant, durable, and easy to clean. The general rule of thumb is, as the bathroom gets bigger, it tends to get better ventilation. Tiling can get expensive (both labour and tiles), so partial tiling just around the wet areas can be a good idea, and using half-wall panelling gives a more classic look in a bathroom installation.
Should I buy fixtures and fittings myself?
Having your bathroom fitter buy all the fixtures and fittings will increase the chance of your project being on time and on budget. However, if you’re using a sole trader, this may not always be possible because it takes time and resources. This is one of the increased risks of using a sole trader, so make sure if you go down this route, you are super clear on exactly what you are buying, lead times, and dimensions. Your contractor can also help manage these elements.
What size of contractor is suitable for my bathroom renovation?
This depends on your personal situation. If you have renovated before, are confident with your procurement of fixtures and fittings, and happy to take on a little more risk with regards to budget and timeline, then using a sole trader is a competitive option. If you want more security and can afford it, we would recommend using a small bathroom installation company to negate the aforementioned. Our renovation experts can guide you through choosing the right fit.
How best do I decipher my quotes?
Have a quote comparison call with us! We see hundreds of quotes for bathroom renovations every month and know exactly what to look out for. A few of these items include making sure the scope of work is identical, how payment schedules differ, what workmanship guarantees are provided, who is procuring the fixtures and fittings, and what they have in their T&Cs, and what this means for you and your project. Our contractor network can help streamline this bathroom remodelling process.
